How to Take Care of Your Braces During the Holidays

Our team here at Carmel Valley Orthodonotics wants all of our patients to have the absolute happiest holidays possible! We know that schedules are not-so-ordinary and that there are all kinds of foods and goodies that might not be in your regular diet. That’s why we want to remind you to remember to take extra good care of your braces during this time of year. Continue reading to find out some of our tips to help your braces have a great holiday too!

Foods to Avoid

We know this one is hard, but the same foods that will break or damage your braces during the rest of the year will still damage them during the holidays. It’s important to avoid super sticky or gummy sweet treats and candies. Really hard foods can also wreak havoc on your brackets and wires. Stay completely away from nuts, hard crackers, hard cookies and as always, popcorn.

Don’t Forget the Basics

There is so much excitement during the holidays and it’s easy to forget our everyday habits. Make sure to remember the instructions that your orthodontist has told you about your braces or Invisalign. If you wear rubber bands, be sure to wear them as instructed. If you have Invisalign, don’t forget to wear or change your trays as you normally would.

Be Prepared When Packing

It’s very easy for toothbrushes or other oral hygiene tools to get forgotten at home when traveling. We would like to suggest having backups ready in case you lose or forget your toothbrush. Even if you don’t need it, you’ll have one when it’s time to replace it!

Water, Water, Water

The holidays lead to some serious between-meal snacking. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water this time of year! Drinking water gives your teeth a quick rinse between brushings. It also helps keep you hydrated. Whenever possible try to choose water over sugary beverages like punch, soda, or sports drinks.

Don’t Skip Appointments

Everyone is busier this time of year, but it’s important to keep your scheduled appointments with us at our office. If you aren’t able to make an already scheduled appointment, make sure to let us know as soon as possible. We want to reschedule you as close to your original appointment time to make sure your treatment stays on track!

Basic Brushing and Flossing

This sounds obvious but it’s also very important! Brushing and flossing twice a day and after meals when possible is the best way to take proper care of your braces and teeth during this busy month. Don’t let traveling, sleeping in when school is out, or late nights get in the way of remembering to brush and floss.

Happy Holidays from Carmel!

If you follow these tips, you and your braces are sure to have a happy holiday! We hope that you and your family do too! I you have any questions, just let us know. Our entire team is here to help during the holidays – and all year long!
