Braces are a big step toward a healthier, more confident smile – but they also come with new responsibilities when it comes to your daily routine. At Carmel Valley Orthodontics, we’re here to help you build strong habits that keep your teeth and gums healthy throughout your treatment.
Why Brushing with Braces Is So Important
Braces have lots of small spaces where food and plaque can hide. If you don’t brush thoroughly, this buildup can lead to:
• Staining and white spots
• Bad breath
• Gum inflammation
• Cavities or decalcification
Clean teeth move more efficiently, which means good brushing can even help your treatment stay on track.
Brushing Basics for Braces
Here’s how to brush effectively with braces:
• Brush after every meal, or at least 2–3 times per day.
• Use a soft-bristled toothbrush or electric brush.
• Angle the brush above and below each bracket – not just straight on.
• Gently clean the gumline and chewing surfaces, too.
• Take your time – at least 2 minutes total.
• Use fluoride toothpaste and rinse thoroughly.
• Floss daily with a floss threader or water flosser.
• Consider using a proxy brush to clean around brackets.
• Avoid sticky or sugary snacks that cling to your appliances.
