Sports are a cherished part of growing up, providing fun, exercise, and a sense of camaraderie. However, they also pose risks, particularly to your teeth, jaw, and braces. At Carmel Valley Orthodontics, Dr. Sionit and our team believe that the best way to deal with injuries is to prevent them before they happen. This is why we emphasize the importance of wearing a mouthguard during sports activities.
High-Impact Sports and Increased Risks
Engaging in high-impact sports like football, basketball, or soccer significantly increases the likelihood of damage to your braces or mouth injuries. A sudden blow to the face can lead to broken brackets, bent wires, or even tooth loss. The complications can go beyond immediate pain, potentially leading to more complex dental issues and extended treatment times. Protecting your mouth with the right gear is essential to avoid these problems.
Mouthguards: Your Shield Against Injury
Mouthguards are the most effective way to protect your teeth, braces, and jaw during sports. They cushion the impact, distribute the force evenly, and reduce the risk of serious injuries. Not only do they protect your braces and teeth, but they also safeguard your lips, tongue, and cheeks from cuts and bruises. Investing in a good mouthguard is a small price to pay for the security it provides.
Ortho-Friendly vs Boil-and-Bite Mouthguards
While you are undergoing orthodontic treatment, you will have appliances on your teeth and your teeth will be moving. Therefore, the traditional boil-and-bite mouthguards, which work well before orthodontic treatment, are not designed for those in braces. We don’t want the mouthguard to grab onto the braces or other appliances on your teeth and pull them off. A more brace-friendly mouth guard will be needed, one that can fit more loosely and slide over the braces or other appliance without getting caught or applying pressure. We carry these types of mouthguards in the office, and we are happy to provide you with one! Just let us know your sport and we will find the right type for you.
Handling Orthodontic or Dental Emergencies
Despite all precautions, accidents can still happen. If you experience an orthodontic or dental emergency, it’s crucial to act quickly. For minor issues like a loose bracket or wire, you can cover the sharp ends with orthodontic wax and contact us for an appointment. In case of severe pain, broken teeth, or significant injuries, seek immediate professional dental or medical help.
